Young people encouraged to sign up to community scheme

Young people in Surrey are being encouraged to sign up to a scheme aimed at getting them more involved in the community.

The National Citizen Service involves two weeks away from home, team building exercises and individual challenges.

Youth charity Catch22, Surrey Clubs for Young People and Surrey County Council are running the scheme. It aims to focus on building teamwork and leadership skills, covering the likes of sport, drama, outdoor education and environmental projects. The two weeks away from home will focus on enabling young people to make a difference to their community.

The scheme, which lasts for five weeks, will be open to young people in four parts of the county – Tandridge, Woking, Farncombe and Mole Valley. Already open to Year 11 school leavers (age 16), the scheme is now being extended to years 10, 11 and 12 (ages 15-17).

Kay Hammond, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “This really is a great opportunity for young people to make a difference in communities at the same time as having fun and picking up new skills.”
