Surrey school children followed in the tyre tracks of Hollywood stars and Formula One drivers by racing their own cars on the Top Gear test track.

Unlike the stars in reasonably priced cars, the youngsters had to first design and make their own electric cars before racing them on the circuit at Dunsfold Park near Guildford.
Denise Saligopoulos Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games said “Some say we may have inspired the next generation of Stigs here in Surrey.”
“The children learned a lot about engineering as well experiencing the thrill of motor racing on the Top Gear track. They had to think about how to get the most from their engines as well as the learning how good aerodynamics can increase performance. I hope this may have inspired some of the children to think about following a career in engineering.”
The four hour endurance race was part of the P&G Surrey School Games which has seen 3,500 children compete in a wide variety of sports including mountain biking, athletics and hockey.
Collingwood Technology College in Camberley beat Esher High School, Fullbrook School, Woking High, and Ash Manor School to be crowned Surrey champions at the event on 12 July. Pupils and teachers began working on the cars in February and used a variety of materials with the winning car having bodywork made out of bed sheets and resin.
