Beacons to light up the sky for Diamond Jubilee

Beacons to light up the sky for Diamond Jubilee

Volunteers and community groups have been urged to build and light a beacon to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

A total of 2,012 beacons are expected to light up the commonwealth as part of the programme to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. The Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Sarah Goad, is encouraging local residents to come forward to organise the beacon events across the county.

She said: “Lighting beacons has been a way of showing unity across our towns and villages for generations. This is a fantastic way of celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and I really look forward to seeing volunteers and communities across Surrey leading these celebrations.”

Beacons were used in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and more recently in 1977 and 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilee.
