Olympic deal sparks business talks
A deal to train Olympic athletes in Surrey has led to business talks between Surrey and Nigeria.
Business leaders from the Bank of Industry Nigeria visited Surrey last week to explore the opportunities the county has to offer.
The African nation is keen to build on its relationship with Surrey on the back of a decision to train its Olympic and Paralympic athletes in the county during London 2012.
Following a presentation by Surrey County Council cabinet member Denise Saliagopoulos at the County Club in High Street, Guildford, the Nigerian delegation spoke to a variety of people from Surrey businesses including hospitality firms and a water treatment company. The Nigerians then visited Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge and Surrey Satellite Technologies in Guildford.
The visit was organised by Surrey County Council, Guildford Borough Council, Surrey Chambers of Commerce and the University of Surrey.
Mrs Saliagopoulos said: “We hope the relationships we’re building with nations during our preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games will last well beyond the summer of 2012.
“It’s important we explore opportunities that could benefit Surrey businesses, particularly during these difficult economic times. The visit by the Nigerian delegation was a chance to look at potential business links which could be of mutual benefit for many years to come.”
