The Canadian Road Cycling Team has decided to train in Surrey to prepare for the London 2012 Games.

The announcement comes soon after it was revealed the USA will also base its elite cyclists in the county to prepare for the Olympic road and time trial races, which will both take place in Surrey.

The Canadians have already been to Surrey, having trained for and taken part in the London-Surrey Cycle Classic Olympic test race in the summer.

Matthew Knight, Road Coordinator for the Canadian Cycling Association, said: “Training in Surrey, the location of the road cycling events for the Olympic Games, will be extremely beneficial for our preparations for this most important event of 2012.

“The hospitality that we have received from the Surrey community has been very positive. Training on the roads used for the Olympic Games will best prepare our athletes as they race for the gold next summer.”

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: “It’s fantastic news that so many top athletes will be training in Surrey to prepare for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and I’m sure everyone will give the Canadian cycle team a warm welcome. I hope local cyclists will enjoy sharing the roads with elite athletes and hopefully the Canadians’ presence will inspire more people to take up the sport.”

Surrey County Council has been working hard to bring Olympic athletes to the county. Those already signed up to train in Surrey include Australian cyclists, Chinese tennis players and the entire Nigerian Olympic and Paralympic teams. Each national Olympic and Paralympic Committee can obtain a £25,000 grant to spend on their training that will benefit the local economy if they choose Surrey.
