Around 700 children under five and their families saw the pages of their favourite books come to life in a stunning park setting. The Big Read for Small Children event at Painshill Park was organised by Surrey County Council to encourage parents to read with their children.

Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Learning Linda Kemeny, who attended the event, said: “It’s important that children discover the joy of reading from an early age and develop a love of stories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”

The families, mostly from Sure Start Children’s Centres, participated in nursery rhymes and story telling. Each story was accompanied by activities to help bring the books to life, including dressing up. Emma Dodd, a children’s author and illustrator, read stories and drew pictures.
