Join Surrey’s Summer Reading Challenge
Surrey’s young book lovers, who have fuelled a borrowing boom in the last decade, are being encouraged to take on a Roald Dahl reading challenge this summer.
To mark 100 years since the birth of the famous storyteller, Surrey County Council’s libraries want children aged four to 11 to read six of his books during the long school holiday.
Last year nearly 17,000 children took part and all they have to do to get involved this time is sign up at one of Surrey’s 53 libraries.
The challenge comes just weeks after the council revealed that children borrowed more than two million fiction books from the county’s libraries in a year – the highest figure for more than a decade.
It follows investment in new town centre libraries in Walton-on-Thames and Dorking and revamped branches in Woking and Godalming as well as plans being approved to relocate Horley Library to a better location to meet 21st century needs.
More information about the challenge – based around the theme of ‘The Big Friendly Read’ – can be found on the council’s website.
Hundreds turn out for fire station open day
Leatherhead Fire Station threw open its doors to more than 200 visitors at the weekend.
People flocked to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s Cobham Road station to see engines and equipment used to tackles blazes while crews were on hand to tell people about their work and offer safety tips.
More information about upcoming open days in the county can be found on the council’s website.
Dementia carers coffee mornings
Coffee mornings for people with dementia and their carers have been organised by Surrey County Council’s libraries service.
The events, which take place next month, will give people affected by the condition a chance to talk to through their problems with representatives of The Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK while also finding out what the library service can offer to dementia sufferers.
