First funding awarded from £100m community projects fund

The first two projects to be approved for funding from the Surrey County Council Your Fund Surrey community funding project have been announced. Funding of £30k has been awarded to the Weybridge Men’s Shed and £35,000 for the Claygate Recreation Ground Trust.

The £100m fund is designed to give financial backing to projects submitted by residents and community groups that will enhance their local area, with people encouraged to ‘Think Big’.

Michael O’Sullivan, Trustee and Treasurer of the Weybridge Men’s Shed Charity said: “We are indeed honoured to have been the first organisation advised by Your Fund Surrey of an award. On behalf of our Steering Group, our vital key holders, and the growing number of “shedders” already benefitting from the facilities, a huge and grateful “Thank you!”. Our doors opened in July, and the generosity of Your Fund Surrey will enable the internal fitout of both sheds to be finished and an underground water treatment system installed to complete the Project.”

Helen Maguire from Claygate Recreation Ground Trust said “This is great news we can now progress with the Family Garden and pedestrian path to the pavilion, which is the second stage of our landscaping plan, following the successful rebuild and opening of the Claygate Pavilion this year. This funding will enable individuals, families and sporting and community groups regardless of ability to enjoy spending time outdoors thus increasing their health and wellbeing”.

Currently there are nearly 1,350 ideas pinned and over 135,000 people have visited the Your Fund Surrey ideas map. The Your Fund Surrey team has received nearly 200 submissions since the portal opened earlier this year.

Surrey County Councillor Mark Nuti said “YFS has seen an incredible public response across the county. And we’re delighted to be able to start allocating funding to community projects like these which will make a positive impact on their communities – we look forward to seeing more and more funding allocated across the whole breadth of the county.  So keep them coming – even if you’ve never put a funding application together before – get together with others in your community and we can help to help you make it happen”.

To come up with a community project idea residents are encouraged to speak to their local County Councillor, community groups, neighbours and friends about what could be achieved in their area and what ideas might already be being developed.
