Surrey County Council announce return of community awards celebrating local heroes

After a successful launch in 2022, Surrey County Council has announced the return of its highly anticipated community awards, Stars in Surrey, set to take place this December.

Stars in Surrey celebrates the extraordinary achievements, hard work and dedication of people and teams who go out of their way to help their neighbours and communities and make Surrey a special place to live and work.

The awards were initially set up by the council to acknowledge those people and groups who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, commitment, and service to the benefit of Surrey – including council staff, partners and community heroes making a difference around the county. Nominations for this year’s awards are now open, with external nominations accepted across five different categories celebrating community heroes.

The nomination categories are:

  • Team Award for Outstanding Customer Service
  • Championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award
  • Greener Future Champion Award (Enabling a greener future)
  • Frontline Worker of the Year (No One Left Behind)
  • The Make It Happen Community Hero Award (Empowering Communities)

Founder of Ukraine UK Unity and 2022 winner of ‘The Make It Happen Community Hero Award (Empowering Communities)’, Irina Garmash Creeger, said: “I was pleasantly surprised, overwhelmed and honoured to receive the award last year. Although the award was given to me as an individual, I wanted to share the award with my team at Ukraine UK Unity. The award recognises the vital role that community groups play in helping people, spreading kindness, compassion, hope and knowledge. I hope more people “with big hearts”, will continue to support their Surrey community, and their efforts can be recognised at the 2023 awards. Get nominating today.

Leader of the Council Tim Oliver, said: “Following on from a successful debut last year, I am delighted to see the Stars in Surrey awards return. Stars in Surrey really was a great way to pay tribute to some incredible people and teams who work in many different ways to benefit Surrey. Everyone knows a local hero, and we want to hear about the amazing things they do in our county, so please nominate your heroes for this year’s Stars in Surrey awards and help us celebrate the incredible people who help make Surrey such a wonderful place.”

The awards are open to everyone who lives or works in Surrey or serves Surrey residents. This year, individuals and community groups are able to self-nominate. If you believe you or your group can demonstrate a successful case study please consider making a submission.

The 2023 awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday 5 December.

The closing date for entries is Friday 28 July at 5pm and can be submitted by filling out the online application form.

The opportunity to sponsor the awards is now available. For further information or to confirm your sponsorship please contact Elliot.Small@surreycc.gov.uk.
