Bus pass extended for Ukrainian nationals on the Homes for Ukraine scheme

Surrey County Council has agreed with bus operators in Surrey to extend the Homes for Ukraine temporary bus pass scheme, offering Ukrainian nationals continued free travel on their most used bus route.

Previously proposed to run until December 2023, the extended Homes for Ukraine temporary bus pass scheme will now run to 31 March 2024.

The scheme remains open for new applications and existing pass holders alike. New applicants in 2023 can apply for a free pass up to 31 March 2024. Existing applicants who have already had their first three or six month free bus pass, can extend passes to a maximum of 9 months free travel in total or to 31 of March 2024, whichever date is sooner. For new applicants applying in January, February or March next year, a pass will be offered for three months from the date of their application.

The Homes for Ukraine temporary bus pass is free of charge and users simply need to show their pass to the driver or tap on the ticket machine when boarding the bus from their chosen route. Children under 5 years don’t need their own bus pass.

Listed below are operators currently offering the Homes for Ukraine temporary bus pass on their routes. Once issued, the bus pass can be used Monday to Sunday on the routes offered by the chosen bus operator only.

The current confirmed bus operators supporting the scheme are:

– Compass Travel

– Diamond

– Metrobus

– Stagecoach

– Falcon Coaches

– Reptons

– Southdown

– White Bus

Cllr Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Transport, Infrastructure and Growth said: “I’m delighted that the Homes for Ukraine buss pass scheme is being extended.

“The scheme has already proven to be a great help for Ukrainian families as they settle into a new life here in Surrey and it’s great that it will continue to be there for the coming months.

“Not only has it been useful for getting around, particularly during a cost-of-living crisis, but users have also reported benefits in reducing isolation and improving mental health.

“I’d like to thank Surrey’s bus operators for their assistance in providing this, alongside all our local partners and central government who continue to provide invaluable support through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.”
