Guildford residents invited to have their say on new walking and cycling route

People who live and travel through Burpham are being encouraged to give their views on updated proposals for a cycle and walking route between New Inn Lane roundabout, Burpham and York Road crossroads, Guildford, including Boxgrove roundabout.

The new route is being designed to make walking and cycling safer and easier for residents to access key destinations such as local schools and the town centre, in a more sustainable way.

A survey is available from today (18 September) until 13 November 2023 and information events will also be taking place as follows:

Date Venue
Sat 23 SeptemberGeorge Abbot School, 10am – 2pm
Wed 4 OctoberBurpham Church, 6.30pm – 9pm
Sat 14 OctoberGuildford High School, 10am – 2pm
Wed 8 NovemberGuildford High School, 6.30pm – 9pm

Plans for road closures which would need to be implemented if the scheme goes ahead, have been revised to significantly reduce disruption. These include:

  • No road closures during the day
  • No traffic lights in place during the day
  • Any closures to take place at night only, whilst still allowing access for residents.

A further change is proposed regarding the width of the road, which would see it remaining the same as it is currently.

Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Transport, Infrastructure and Economy said,The views of our residents are important to us, and this is why we chose to pause the introduction of this scheme to allow more time to engage with a wider group of people. We have also developed new arrangements to significantly minimise disruption while the scheme is being built, which would see road closures only occurring at night.

Surrey has the highest number of cyclist casualties in the UK and is the fifth highest for pedestrian casualties in Great Britain – we have a responsibility to help address this by providing safe routes and crossing facilities to town centres and other locations such as schools.

With 41% of Surrey’s carbon emissions coming from transport, we are also committed to doing all we can to make Guildford and the whole of Surrey a cleaner, greener place to live and travel.

I encourage residents and others who travel in these areas to take the opportunity to have their say.”

This is one of 13 schemes which has been awarded government funding to support transformational, innovative projects which reallocate road space to active travel modes, making walking and cycling more accessible.
