Two more school road safety schemes get the green light

Zebra crossings have been installed at St Michael Catholic Primary School, Ashford and Walton Oak Primary School, Walton-on-Thames this week, providing safer routes to school.

The new crossings will also help encourage children and families to walk, cycle or scoot during the school run. Eleven schools around the county have been chosen to receive improved road safety measures, as part of £3m of extra funding allocated by Surrey County Council.

Kevin Deanus, Cabinet Member for Highways and Community Resilience said, “We recognise that road safety and reducing speeding, especially around schools are matters our residents want to see prioritised.

“The £3million investment into road safety outside Surrey’s schools has already improved the lives of children and families at several schools throughout the county.  This week I am delighted to see two more schools receive important safety measures which we hope will encourage more cycling, walking, and wheeling to school, help keep residents safe and reduce carbon emissions and congestion.”

Rt Hon Dominic Raab, Member of Parliament for Esher and Walton on opening the crossing at Walton Oak Primary School said, “It was a great team effort with teachers and parents at Walton Oak Primary School to secure a safe pedestrian crossing on Ambleside Avenue. I understand children’s safety when crossing this busy road has been an ongoing concern, and I am glad families can now safely travel to and from school.

Thank you to Councillor Rachael Lake and Kevin Deanus for all their hard work in ensuring these vital works were completed as soon as possible.”
