Everyone is invited to visit their local Surrey library, with the launch of Surrey County Council’s ‘It’s My Library’ promotional campaign.
Some of our biggest libraries have significant and exciting building projects underway that will continue into 2025. We are ensuring that they are great places for all residents to use year-round. Every library provides free access to high-speed internet, computer workstations and digital tools ensuring that all our residents can stay informed and connected. Comfy seating areas and welcoming library staff encourage residents to pop in and use any of the facilities available, or just take a seat and chat with friends.
Vibrant Social Spaces
Surrey’s libraries are free to visit. Library membership is free, and anyone who lives, works or studies in Surrey is welcome to come on in and use the space. The libraries are vibrant, social spaces with exciting activities and events for all, whether that is exhibitions, talks, reading groups or one-off live performances from visiting authors, artists or performers.
Libraries are learning hubs and those wishing to research their family history or join online courses can further their own educational journey, for free within any library. There is free access to all kinds of on-line resources including Ancestry.com (family history), Which Magazine (consumer reviews) and Theory Test Pro (driving theory test preparation) that are all well used services by library members. Visiting the library in person offers community connection, activities and a wealth of information on local services. Libraries are where it happens!
Finding Support
Surrey libraries friendly staff hold a wealth of knowledge about Surrey County Council’s Services and can signpost or support visitors with any questions about the council’s services. This includes help with Blue Badge and bus pass applications.
Library staff can book individuals onto digital courses run by in-house ‘Digital Support volunteers’ who teach those essential digital skills, improving residents’ online capabilities ensuring no one in Surrey is left behind.
Homeworkers Welcome
Now an attractive and zero-cost option for home workers, library members can use the free Wi-Fi, the computer workstations (if they aren’t bringing their laptops or tablets) and print directly from any device including their phones. Many libraries have bright and modern hireable rooms too, perfect for off-site team meetings, regular workshops or an ‘occasional-office’ set up.
Super Access – Visit the Library When it Suits You
Library members who are 16 years old and over, who have had an in-person introduction, are able to access the library during additional unstaffed hours at seven library locations. In some Surrey libraries this is providing over 30 hours a week additional access. During ‘Super Access’ hours, library members can borrow and return books, study, use the computers, and print.
Volunteers Welcome
Surrey Libraries offer plenty of volunteering opportunities for people of all ages. Typical roles include, Rhymetime volunteers, Summer Reading Challenge support, digital volunteers and activities helpers. Volunteers within the library service can meet new people, learn new skills and make a difference in their local community.
Health Benefits & Community Connection
Surrey libraries offer a wealth of health information and access to services. Members have access to a free 6-week loan of a health tracker smartwatch; there is a clever games table in Banstead library inspiring those living with dementia to be more active and; there are reading groups that are a great affordable way to connect with others, as well as a wide choice of events and activities to choose from to. Libraries enhance wellbeing and community connection; they are a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.
Councillor Denise Turner Stewart, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Customers and Communities said: “We are so proud of our library transformation work here at Surrey, welcoming everyone in to use these great places. We have completely changed the way our 52 libraries operate across our towns and villages; they are truly at the heart of our communities.
“Our staff and library volunteers are fully committed to their key community roles and each library has so much to offer, be that excellent IT facilities, access to learning and culture, health benefits or essential in-person community connection.
“We encourage residents to visit their local Surrey library to find out how it can enrich their lives and that of their families and friends. Our inclusive library environment welcomes everyone. So, whether they are looking to work from somewhere new, get creative, study or simply relax with a good book, the library has something for everyone.”
