Children in Stoke, Ash and Westborough have been taking part in Olympic themed activities as part of a scheme awarded over £120,000 from the Mental Health Investment Fund.
The Children’s Holiday Inclusive Play Scheme (CHIPS) had a fun-filled summer thanks to generous support from the fund, which supports people in improving their emotional health and wellbeing.
Many children attending CHIPS come from backgrounds of poverty, mental ill health, and disabilities. This group often includes children who are young carers, and those in foster care. Additionally, at least one-third of those attending the scheme have learning or behavioural challenges and require additional support during the holidays.
The holiday club, which has been awarded £120,680 over three years, enjoyed a visit from Councillor Mark Nuti, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, and Public health.
Cllr Nuti heard from children who eagerly shared that they loved “making new friends” and “trying different activities,” with loom bands being a particular hit.
“It’s heartwarming to see the positive impact of investment in children’s mental health,” said Cllr Nuti. “CHIPS is doing incredible work in empowering our youngest community members. It’s amazing to see how much the children have gained from just a week at CHIPS. Their confidence has soared, and they’ve made friends.”
Throughout the week, children created Olympic rings from craft materials, printed Olympic-themed t-shirts, and participated in various sports, including skateboarding. These activities not only provided entertainment but also fostered creativity, teamwork, and physical fitness.
Nicky Cronin, who coordinated CHIPS for summer 2024 at Ash Grange Primary School, said: “For many of these children, having fun at CHIPS was their summer holiday.
“CHIPS is dedicated to providing inclusive and enjoyable activities for children and we focus on ensuring every child has a memorable and enriching experience.
“The support from the Mental Health Investment Fund has been instrumental in enhancing the program, allowing more children to have a safe, fun environment this summer where they can learn and grow.”
