Surrey Fire and Rescue Service recently had the pleasure of welcoming local children from the Redhill Shakha group to Reigate Fire Station as part of their annual Raksha Bandhan celebrations. The event, which is centered around the Hindu festival of universal bonding and protection, highlighted the strong relationship between the fire service and the community.
As part of the celebration, the children tied Rakhi’s, traditional protection bands, onto the firefighters, symbolising friendship and appreciation for their bravery and service. This symbolic gesture reaffirmed the deep connection between the firefighters and the local community.
In addition to the Rakhi ceremony, firefighters provided the children with an engaging and informative talk about the critical work carried out by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. The children had the chance to learn about fire safety, the challenges firefighters face, and the vital role the fire service plays in safeguarding the public.
The event also featured a fun and creative cupcake decorating session, which added a lighthearted and festive touch to the day. The children, firefighters, and volunteers enjoyed decorating and sharing cupcakes, further strengthening the bond between the community and its first responders.
Dalwinder Rai, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We had a really lovely time at our fire station celebrating Raksha Bandhan and are incredibly thankful to the Redhill Shakha Club for giving our crews the opportunity to engage with the children and participate in such a meaningful event.
“This message from the group truly resonated with us: ‘We believe the Fire Service is a noble organisation that serves and protects the public, and as a way of showing our appreciation, we would like to visit the local Fire Service and tie a friendship/protection band to the firefighters.
“It was an honour to be part of this celebration and strengthen our bond with the community.”
