Surrey County Council hosted a moving ceremony at the Surrey History Centre in Woking to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday, 27th January, reflecting on the atrocities of the Holocaust and honouring the victims and survivors of one of history’s darkest periods.
The event, which took place from 11:00 AM, was attended by the Chair of Surrey County Council, Saj Hussain, and featured a range of speakers and reflections. Attendees heard the powerful testimony of Holocaust survivor Ted Truscoe, who shared his personal experiences and insights.
The day began with a heartfelt welcome and address from the Chair, followed by a speech by SCC Member Paul Deach. Rabbi Alexander Goldberg, in an act of remembrance, led the lighting of memorial candles and offered a prayer to honour the memory of those who lost their lives.
The ceremony also included a special focus on the stories of lesser-known victims of Nazi persecution. Dr. Simon Jarrett, co-curator of the exhibition Finding Ivy: A Life Worthy of Life. This exhibition told the previously unknown story of the 13 British-born victims. This exhibition, hosted in the Surrey History Centre’s foyer, highlights the often-overlooked suffering of disabled individuals during the Holocaust.
The event concluded with an opportunity for attendees to view the exhibition and engage in conversations with Dr. Jarrett about the exhibition.
This free, public event emphasised the importance of unity and understanding in preserving the memory of the Holocaust and educating future generations about its lessons.
