Grass cutting to get going early following £1.5m investment injection

Grass cutting across the county will begin next week to keep pedestrians and drivers safe.

Surrey’s annual grass cutting programme will begin three weeks earlier this year to get ahead of the growing season and to ensure six cuts are delivered in urban areas and two in rural settings. Cutting grass across the highway network ensures clear access to roads and pavements, prevents trip hazards and ensures visibility is maintained for pedestrians and drivers, whilst also enhancing the overall appearance of the public highway.

The first two cuts for every Surrey district and borough will take place from February to April this year with the remaining cuts to follow until October 2025.

Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth, said, We recognise that grass cutting and weed control have been a concern for some of our residents over the past couple of years and that the delivery of this has fallen short of both our and residents’ expectations.

“We have listened. We’re investing an additional £1.5m in grass cutting this year so we can reliably and resiliently deliver grass cuts across the county. We’re also cutting earlier, have tripled our resources and have changed some of our contractors to ensure we are delivering a better service.

“Our full programme of works will also include cutting back vegetation, hedge clearing, sign cleaning, weed control and removing detritus from pavements to clean up the highway network and get Surrey in a better place for Spring.”

An interactive map shows where and when the grass will be cut in each area, subject to weather conditions. Established blue heart sites will not be cut until the end of the growing season.
