John Graham Construction Ltd has been awarded a highways construction contract by Surrey County Council to deliver critical improvements to the A320 road network between Ottershaw and Chertsey.
In the summer of 2020 Surrey County Council was awarded £41.8 million by Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund to improve the A320 in support of the Runnymede 2030 local plan.
The intended improvements consist of major upgrades to the road and will not only increase overall traffic capacity but also provide improved traffic flow through four key junctions and link sections. With improved signalling, access to the M25 at junction 11 will also be improved. The works aim to make the route more reliable and support economic growth.
There will be improvements for walkers and cyclists, including new crossing points and wider foot and cycle paths, and improved access to public transport. It is hoped that the improvements to both the national cycle route and Surrey’s local foot and cycle paths will encourage people to walk and cycle more.
The construction programme is being developed with the contractor.
Enabling works will start from Monday 24 February 2025 and will include site surveys, site clearance and establishing the works compound, ahead of the main construction starting in mid-March.
To facilitate site clearance the dedicated left lane from the A320 Guildford Road onto St Peter’s Way eastbound will be closed from 5am on Monday 24 February. From Tuesday 25 February to Friday 28 February the full length of the lefthand lane travelling eastbound between St Peter’s Roundabout and M25 J11 will be closed. And the lefthand lane travelling westbound will close halfway along the road between J11 and the roundabout. Our contractor will be working extended hours to ensure the works can be completed as quickly as possible.
There will also be lane closures on the approaches to the St Peter’s Way roundabout in place from Tuesday 25 February through to Tuesday 4 March 2025. These will be off peak.
Phase one of the improvement works will begin in mid-March.
Natalie Bramhall, Cabinet Member for Property, Waste and Infrastructure, said: “Those who drive on the A320 regularly will appreciate how busy this road is and how vital these improvements are to residents and businesses along this key route.
“I am really pleased we have secured this contract with John Graham Construction Ltd, and we can begin to deliver this long-awaited scheme.”
Gareth McLaverty, Project Director at John Graham Construction, said: “We are delighted to be delivering this transformative scheme on behalf of Surrey County Council. The A320 North of Woking project is a vital infrastructure investment that will not only improve safety and traffic flow but also unlock thousands of much-needed new homes in the region.”
