For the third year running, Surrey County Council has worked with venues in towns and villages from North to South and East to West to deliver much-needed Warm Welcomes on the doorsteps of Surrey’s residents. Collaborating with community partnerships and organisations, we have delivered Warm Welcomes in the heart of our communities across the whole of Surrey. Venues included libraries, village halls, and other local community spaces. We are proud to say that, as a collective, we have pulled together to support over 65,000 residents across the county.
The scheme has now concluded for this year, and we’d like to thank all of our partners, especially our volunteers, for making this incredible scheme such a huge success.
The Warm Welcomes venues offered a warm environment, providing free hot drinks, winter essentials, energy advice, and a range of additional services such as debt and employment advice, and social activities. The feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive, fostering a real sense of community and support for people who were struggling with social isolation, financial worries and much more.
The initiative has made a significant impact on local communities, with approximately 65,648 people attending, with 11,517 winter essentials distributed, and 3,687 fuel vouchers provided to residents in need. This shows the strong community spirit and support across the county, making sure no one faces the cold months alone, aligning with Surrey County Council’s goal of ‘No One Left Behind,’ demonstrating our commitment to helping all residents.
While the winter scheme has concluded, support is still available all year-round with many of the community venues remaining open during spring and summer. Details of the venues can be found on our website.
“It overwhelmed me, I wasn’t expecting so much support. The information I received was really helpful, I didn’t realise this help was out there.” – resident
“The feedback has been 100% positive, and the numbers speak for themselves. Individuals are coming week after week and then telling their friends who also come along. Those attending are so grateful and happy that this opportunity exists. It is helping those attending to feel less isolated, and they can’t believe the provision of things such as fuel vouchers and blankets etc are open to them.” – venue
“Best day of my life, coming to [the Warm Welcome]” – resident (A bereaved gentleman speaks about finding a place to experience peace since losing his wife.)
“One guest told us that his life has been transformed by the [Warm Welcome]. Another said they wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the [Warm Welcome].” – venue
“It is very positive. As well as being to save on fuel bills, we find that people (especially people with vulnerabilities) welcome the ability to meet and talk with others.” – venue
“The feedback couldn’t be more positive. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the service and the environment, especially through the colder, and socially isolating months. As the sun begins to shine, spirits are even higher, and attendance continues to grow.” – venue
“People are so grateful particularly for the help with energy costs.” – venue
“People find it to be a place where they can come and feel welcome and belong. It’s great for meeting new people and building friendships.” – venue
Councillor Denise Turner-Stewart, Surrey County Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Customer and Communities, said: “We are really proud of the Warm Welcome scheme, which truly captures the essence of Surrey’s community and compassion. It’s uplifting to witness so many residents uniting to support each other, particularly during tough times.
“We are blessed to have so many kind, caring and generous residents and volunteer and faith groups within our communities who have come together with Surrey County Council to ensure that all residents have local access to one of our 80 Warm Hubs across our county. This initiative has not only delivered vital resources to those in need but also strengthened the sense of unity and togetherness within our communities.”
