Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is seeking the support of property owners and developers to provide access to empty domestic or commercial properties for essential firefighter training.
As part of the service’s ongoing commitment to ensuring our crews are fully prepared to respond to emergencies, SFRS are looking for unused buildings where we can safely conduct breathing apparatus training. This training is crucial for maintaining the skills and confidence needed to operate in smoke-filled and hazardous environments.
Area Commander for Learning and Development, Adrian Willard, said: “Having a realistic training environment helps to mimic real incidents, without putting lives or property at risk. The smoke used in our training exercises is cosmetic and does not cause any lasting damage to properties.
“This regular training in varied environments ensures firefighters use effective search techniques and decision making – rather than a fire house they are used to working in.
“By supporting this, you’re contributing to the overall safety and preparedness of Surrey.”
Last month, crews took part in simulating a fire in a disused care home in Cranleigh, provided by Surrey County Council. The exercise included a live casualty, support from colleagues at South East Coast Ambulance Service (including the HART team) and the Salvation Army.
