Second hand bikes get new lease of life with Borrow Bikes

Surrey County Council and Surrey Libraries, in collaboration with Active Surrey, are excited to announce the launch of Borrow Bikes a free bike loaning service via libraries in Chertsey and Ashford.

Library members can now visit Chertsey and Ashford Libraries to borrow a free bike, making it easier than ever to explore the beautiful surroundings of Surrey. Bikes could be used for commuting to work, meeting friends and family, or venturing out to enjoy the rich arts and culture of the area. Bikes can be loaned for up to 10 days, allowing plenty of time to explore and enjoy. Under 18’s must have a parent or guardian present at the library to sign the Bike Registration Form.

All the bikes available to borrow are upcycled, second hand bikes that have been given a new lease of life thanks to the wider Surrey community. Some were purchased via the Recycle Bike Hub, where 100% of bike’s sales proceeds go towards a hospice for children and young adults. Others were purchased at low cost from Surrey’s Waste Management partner, Suez.

Denise Turner-Stewart, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Community, said: The Borrow Bike scheme at Chertsey and Ashford libraries are a fantastic addition to our community resources. What makes this pilot so special is the story behind the bikes themselves. The refurbishment has been a true community effort, with support from Spelthorne Borough Council’s Bike Maintenance volunteer programme, local bike mechanics, and even the prison service, where some bikes were reconditioned by the prison workforce.

We encourage residents to reap the rewards of this incredible initiative and consider cycling as a viable mode of transport. When they use a Borrow Bike, our residents are not only doing something for their personal health and the environment by choosing an eco-friendly active-travel option – they are also playing their part in supporting the wider Surrey community. We hope that residents take pride in continuing the story of these bikes through adventures in their local area and further afield.
