Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Open Day: Recruiting in our fire and rescue control room!

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) are hosting an open day to recruit the next generation of Firefighters (Control).

As a Firefighter (Control), you’ll be the first point of contact for emergency calls – playing a critical role in mobilising fire engines and crews, supporting incident management, and working closely with other emergency services.

In a role where no two days are the same, based in the Joint Fire Control Room in Surrey, you’ll help protect over 2.5 million people across Surrey, West Sussex, and East Sussex.

In 2024 alone, the control room dispatched crews to over 33,000 incidents, ranging from devastating house fires and road traffic collisions to busy wildfires and water rescues.

The service is encouraging anyone who is interested in the role to join their Joint Fire Control open day to learn more. Happening on Saturday 25 October at our Joint Fire Control at Salfords Fire Station, please book your slot by visiting the recruitment hub here: www.surreycc.gov.uk/firecareers and filling out the online form.

The open day provides a chance to meet the control room crews, ask questions and familiarise yourselves with the role – all whilst the crew deal with real-life scenarios around you.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer of SFRS, Jon Simpson said: “Firefighter (Control) is an absolutely crucial role within our service, and we’re looking for people who are ready to make a real difference. If you’re someone who thrives under pressure, works well in a team, and wants to help protect communities, this could be for you. Come along to our Open Day and take a closer look!”

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Andy Piller, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to support your local fire and rescue service in a vital role ensuring help reaches those who need it most. If you’re looking for a rewarding career working as part of a team in a fast-paced environment to save lives and protect your communities, I would encourage you to find out more.”

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Fire Officer Hannah Youldon said: “Our communities and our firefighters rely on Joint Fire Control to make sure we get the right help to people in need quickly and effectively. It’s a great opportunity to do something really meaningful and I encourage you to find out more.”
