Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to look out for vulnerable people this winter

Everyone has a person. You’re their person.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has launched their “You’re their person” campaign, urging loved ones, carers and utility workers to look out for vulnerable people this winter by referring them for a free Safe and Well Visit.

The campaign stems from learnings from previous, devastating fatal fires whereby it was recognised that all those who sadly lost their lives had someone who cared, popped in or helped them. The service is aiming to raise awareness of their free visits, of which they deliver thousands every year.

A Safe and Well Visit is a free service offered by our fire and rescue service aimed at helping people stay safe in their homes. During these visits, firefighters and specialist prevention staff provide tailored advice on fire safety in the home. The visit includes checking/installing smoke alarms, discussing escape routes, and offering tips to reduce the risk of fire. The service also provides guidance on wellbeing issues such as falls prevention, home security, and connecting with other local support services if needed.

Area Commander for Prevention at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, David Nolan, said, Many of us have someone we care about who might be more vulnerable at home, perhaps because of their age, health, or living circumstances. The “You’re Their Person” campaign urges everyone in Surrey to consider whether they are someone’s person. It could be your elderly neighbour who lives alone, your mum or dad, or someone you know who provides care for others. By taking a moment to check on them and referring them for a Safe and Well Visit, you could make a life-saving difference. Let’s work together to keep residents safe across Surrey. Remember, everyone has a person, make sure you’re there for yours.”
