Trader banned from markets

A trader has been banned from setting foot in markets after he was caught selling fake cosmetics by Surrey County Council Trading Standards officers.

Graham Jardine, 49, of Lower Queen’s Road, Buckhurst Hill, Essex, was twice caught selling counterfeit goods at Kempton Park Market, Surrey.

Trading standards officers seized almost 2,000 fake items during two raids, in April and July 2010, including make-up that was passed off as top brands such as YSL, Chanel and MAC.

Jardine pleaded guilty to 10 offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994, Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and the Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations 2008.

He was banned from attending any market in Surrey for two years during sentencing at Staines Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 20 July, 2011. Jardine was also given a three month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Surrey County Council Trading Standards was awarded £2,000 costs by the court.

David Hodge, Deputy Leader of Surrey County Council, said: “Banning this man from setting foot in a Surrey market for two years will stop him ripping people off. Fake products may seem like a bargain but I would urge people not to be tempted.

“Not only do they damage legitimate businesses during these difficult economic times but they can also be dangerous as they may not meet safety standards. Our trading standards officers will continue their excellent work to stop fakes being sold.”
