Time is running out for parents to apply for secondary school places for their children as latest figures reveal that nearly 5,000 forms have already been received online.
The application deadline for secondary places for next September is 31 October.
Parents who miss the application deadline reduce their chances of getting one of their preferred schools because their forms will not be dealt with until after all the other applications have been processed.
Paper forms can be obtained by emailing schoolbooklets@surreycc.gov.uk or calling 0300 200 1015. All applications will be treated equally regardless of whether they are done on paper or online.
Nine out of 10 applications for places at primary and secondary schools this September were made digitally. The council received 10,306 on-time applications for secondary places and 9,509 of them were made online.
By 12 October this year, the council had received 4,988 online secondary applications for places in the next academic year.*
The success of the online system comes as Surrey seeks to ensure 100% superfast broadband coverage in the county by 2013. The county council is in the process of selecting a company to provide superfast broadband for up to 20% of Surrey residents and businesses – around 100,000 premises – not included in BT’s current plans to roll out the service nationally.
Residents and businesses are being asked to support the drive by completing online surveys to pinpoint the areas of Surrey that receive a poor broadband service.**
Tim Hall, the council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Learning, said: “Parents don’t have long left until the secondary deadline. With half-term falling just before the closing date, I would urge mums and dads to make completing their form a priority.
“The online form is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Parents get the opportunity to change their preferences right up to the closing date and will get email confirmation that their application has been received.”
Parents who apply online will be able to view their offer of a secondary school place on 1 March 2012. Parents who apply on paper will be sent a letter by first class post on 1 March 2012.
