Thirty authors lined up for World Book Night

Book lovers will get an insight into the minds of nearly 30 of Surrey authors during World Book Night 2012.

A little Hollywood glitz and glamour will descend upon Guildford library on Monday 23 April, when military expert Andy Robertshaw, who was a consultant on Steven Spielberg’s movie War Horse, talks about the inspiration behind his work.

Alan Hammond, father of Top Gear's Richard, will be among the authors at Guildford library

He will be joined on the night by a host of fellow authors including thriller writer Meg Gardiner, whom horror legend Stephen King described as one of the finest crime-suspense writers of the last 20 years.

Alan Hammond, father of Top Gear’s Richard Hammond, will share his experiences of writing his first book All’s Fair in Love and Law, about his time in the legal profession.

And author and BBC producer Daniel Grant will talk about tackling his highly-praised book Sex Lessons.

Helyn Clack, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: “Who better to spread the joy of reading than the authors themselves. It will be a privilege and a pleasure to quiz them about what makes their minds tick during the writing process.

“World Book Night will be celebrated by tens of thousands of people throughout the USA and Europe and I’m sure the event at Guildford library will be one of the best. You never know, it might inspire Surrey’s next best-selling writer.”

Surrey’s World Book Night celebration will take place from 7.30pm to midnight. There will be informal chats with the authors individually and in small groups.

They will also bring along a series of props including Vietnamese food, military hardware and prison memorabilia.

The first 100 people to collect 10 authors’ signatures in their brochure on the night will get a free book.
