The Deputy Chief of LOCOG Sir Keith Mills described how he has been hugely impressed with Surrey’s Olympic preparations.
He said: “Surrey is one of the best counties in the country. It gets the big tick on pretty much every front, such as engagement in schools. Companies here have probably got more contracts than any other county in the country.
“You’ve got more training camps here. There will be athletes training here right the way up to the Games in the summer. On pretty much every count this county has done a great job.”
LOCOG’s second in command made the comments at Collingwood College in Camberley last week (24 April) when 2,012 pupils formed a giant human London Olympic logo.
Surrey County Council organised the event to celebrate the P&G Surrey School Games which has been encouraging thousands of children to take part in sport.
Helyn Clack, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: “We’ve been working incredibly hard to help ensure Surrey benefits as much as possible from the Olympics and it’s great to get some recognition from Sir Keith.
“Our businesses should be proud of the fact they have won more than £740 million worth of Games related contracts and I’m delighted we’ve been able to attract 31 Olympic and Paralympic teams to train in Surrey as they prepare for competition.
“Perhaps most satisfying is the fact we’ve encouraged thousands of children to take part in a wide variety of sports through the P&G Surrey School Games. I hope it will be the start of a life-long love of sport for many of them.”
