Skip operator prosecuted for dumping waste

On Monday 11 June 2012, waste operator Thomas Murrell was given a three month suspended prison sentence for contempt of court. Surrey County Council successfully brought the case against Mr Murrell after he ignored an earlier court order preventing him from bringing and storing skips loaded with rubbish on land in War Coppice Road in Caterham.

Mr Murrell, 44, from South Drive, Coulsdon, the former owner T M Skips, must stop activities involving waste on the site and remove soils deposited on an ancient monument. In bringing the case, county council officers worked closely with English Heritage, the Environment Agency and Tandridge District Council.

Chairman of Surrey County Council’s planning and regulatory committee Marisa Heath said: “This is an excellent result for local residents who have had their lives blighted by these unauthorised and unlawful waste activities. It demonstrates the determination and professionalism of our planning enforcement and legal teams and the benefits of joint working with other agencies.”
