Steve Playle, Surrey County Council Trading Standards Investigations and Enforcement Manager, said: “We’re pleased Ofgem has finally taken action, but as far as we and consumers are concerned this is two years too late.

“Surrey County Council Trading Standards made history in May 2011 when we won a landmark prosecution against SSE for using misleading doorstep sales tricks to get people to switch energy supplier.

“This changed the way the industry does business and led to energy suppliers ending the dubious practice of doorstep selling.

“It was a real David versus Goliath battle, but if we hadn’t persevered I dread to think how many more people across the country would have been duped into paying more on their energy bills than they should have.

“It is reassuring to see that Ofgem has caught up with the excellent work carried out by my team at Surrey County Council, but it is a shame it has taken this long.”
