£5 million county council fund for winter roads repairs

In this summery weather, the only ice you may be thinking of is the kind that cools your drink.
But Surrey County Council’s highways teams have swapped ice-cream cones for traffic cones as they prepare for the winter ahead.

The council will be investing £5 million this winter into repairing the 200 roads in most need of fixing from cold weather damage.  During severe weather, water seeps into roads, expands as it freezes and cracks the surface.  Repeated thawing and freezing causes the most damage. Last year, the county council allocated an extra £1 million for winter road repairs.

In addition, the council has stored more than 16,000 tonnes of salt at three of its depots ready for dealing with icy roads and snow – twice what the county needs for six days straight of continual gritting.

Operations staff have finished Surrey County Council’s winter plan, which sets out how its fleet of gritters, all-weather vehicles and even reserve tractors are on standby for when snow and ice strike. As last year, the council will also give regular updates via social media when the gritting teams are treating roads.

John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Environment, said: “It may be warm now, but we plan all year round to make sure that Surrey motorists can keep safe even in difficult driving conditions.

“It’s great that we’ve put aside £5 million for road improvements this coming winter. We are doing all we can to keep Surrey moving, and this winter funding is just the tip of the iceberg; we are spending £100 million on completely ripping up and relaying more than 300 miles of road in the next three years under Operation Horizon. These roads have a 10-year guarantee – or the contractor pays.”
