Businesses offering work experience are being handed a cash incentive to help more than 100 unemployed teenagers get on the career ladder.
Surrey County Council is giving employers up to £300 for every 16 to 19-year-old classed as NEET handed on the job training.
The authority has set a goal of filling 110 places by next April as part of its pledge to boost economic growth.
That commitment has already seen the council incentivise businesses to take on 265 apprentices with the aim of achieving 500 more.
Surrey’s Deputy Leader Peter Martin said: “This will give young people the chance to get valuable experience in a business for up to three months, which will make a real difference to their confidence, their CV and their prospects.
“A key part of our work is helping young people get on the career ladder and this initiative, together with our drive to create 500 apprenticeships in a year, is providing them with the jobs and opportunities to make the most of their futures while giving businesses the workforce they require to thrive.”
Businesses receive £300 for each young person filling a work experience role for 12 weeks or £200 for a six-week placement. They have to offer at least 16 hours of training a week.
