A Surrey County Council Cabinet Member has won an award for his role in establishing a new board to improve health and wellbeing.
Michael Gosling was commended with Dr Joe McGilligan in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex NHS Leadership Recognition Awards.
The parts played by the council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing and Dr McGilligan in getting the Surrey Health and Wellbeing Board up and running won them the category for joint working.
Surrey’s board was created as part of the national NHS reforms which saw GPs put in charge of NHS budgets and councils take over public health, with the boards integrating the two.
Mr Gosling and Dr McGilligan jointly chair Surrey’s board. The Redhill GP is also the chair of the East Surrey Clinical Commissioning Group.
After picking up the award for the NHS partnership and system leader of the year category, Mr Gosling said: “This is a big honour for both of us as well as recognition for everyone who has put in so much effort into improving the health of local people.
“Ever since the board launched, we’ve been working hard to strengthen the relationships between health and social care for the benefit of communities and there will be no let-up in our joint efforts.”
