ROUND UP: New car share scheme and hard-hitting play unveiled

Car share scheme up and running

A new car share scheme is up and running in Guildford thanks to a Surrey County Council-backed travel project. University of Surrey students, Royal Surrey County Hospital staff and Surrey Research Park workers can cut their carbon footprint through hiring the Ford Fiesta from the hospital’s car park.

The car is available on a six-month trial through the Surrey Research Park Business Travel Forum. The forum was put in place as part of the Travel SMART programme, a partnership between Surrey County Council and other local organisations. For more information, visit www.travelsmartsurrey.info.

Play raises awareness of child sexual exploitation

A hard-hitting play about child sexual exploitation called Chelsea’s Choice has been shown to professionals working with children in Surrey.

The 40-minute play has been funded by the Surrey Educational Trust as part of Surrey Police and Surrey County Council’s joint awareness-raising campaign and is set to tour schools for seven weeks from 20 January. The play aims to help young people, teachers and their parents spot the signs of sexual exploitation and where to turn to get help.

Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Families Mary Angell said: “Protecting the vulnerable is at the heart of what we do. Theatre is an effective way of reaching out to young people and we hope this play will help them to recognise the signs and know where to turn for help.”
