Surrey County Council’s website has been awarded a maximum four-star rating in a new national report while also being one of a handful labelled a “favourite site”.
The annual report by the Society of Information Technology Management (Socitm) rates the performance of council websites each year and Surrey’s newly designed site was among just 31 out of more than 400 to get the top star rating.
Surrey has moved quickly to embrace the growing public demand to access information on mobile devices, something the report highlighted as key for all councils to do.
Helyn Clack, the council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “I’m delighted our website has been recognised as one of the best of its kind in the country and I have no doubt it is a result of our willingness to innovate and embrace how our residents want to access information in the 21st century.
“About a third of all the people accessing our site these days do so on mobile devices and it’s been our job to address this and make the site work for them as well as those who want to visit via a computer.
“Having a good website is also essential to us providing Surrey taxpayers with value for money. Our site handles millions of transactions annually and managing these online saves tens of millions of pounds every year.
“While I’m pleased our website has received this recognition we plan to do much more to improve it further so it continues to provide residents with the support and advice they need.”
