A key milestone has been marked as the 500th fibre broadband cabinet in a project to make Surrey the best connected county in the UK was unveiled by Surrey County Council deputy leader Peter Martin.

Peter Martin said: “Reaching these milestones means that thousands more Surrey businesses and residents can enjoy the benefits of this high-speed technology in a way they would not have been able to otherwise.

“Now we’ll press ahead with the rest of our project to help as many businesses and residents as we can that are not covered commercially. That is because the benefits are significant, with Surrey’s economy boosted by around £30 million annually and homes getting fast, reliable internet access.”

Further information

More than 75,000 businesses and homes that would otherwise have missed out on the opportunity to get better broadband are now covered by the high-speed technology.

The Superfast Surrey project is stepping in to reach more than 80,000 premises which fall outside the private sector’s commercial plans. It aims to create a county-wide network to help firms do business online and ensure nearly every community enjoys the benefits of the digital world.

The 500th cabinet was installed in Oxshott. More information can be found on BT’s website.
