Surrey County Council has teamed up with building suppliers Jewson to create a new cycle path in Godalming.

The company agreed to provide a strip of land from its adjoining site so the county council could widen a path at Marshall Road, allowing cyclists to safely use the popular route alongside pedestrians.

With nearly nine million bike users in the UK last year, cycling is now the country’s third most popular sport making it more important than ever to provide safe cycle routes that will encourage even more people to get on their bikes.

Council chairman David Munro officially opened the path, which runs between Godalming and Farncombe and was funded by Waverley’s local committee.

Mr Munro said: “I am delighted it has been possible for us to provide the local community with this new cycle path and we are tremendously grateful to Jewson for their support in bringing this about.”

Neil Osborne, Jewson Area Director said: “We are always keen to find ways in which we can support local communities in which we work and donating the land for the cycle path will encourage people in the Godalming area to get on their bikes and keep fit.”
