Plans approved for 360 extra school places in Ewell

Plans to create an extra 360 primary school places in Ewell have been signed off.

Surrey County Council’s Cabinet approved plans to make Danetree Junior an all-through primary school catering for pupils aged four to 11, with an attached nursery.

The expansion is part of a wider reorganisation of primary schools in Ewell aimed at creating a total of 630 extra places for children in the Ewell and north west Epsom areas.

There are also proposals to make a further two schools – Ewell Grove and West Ewell infant schools – all-through primaries.

The two schools currently cater for four to seven-year-olds but would take children up to age 11 under the reorganisation plans.

Danetree Junior, meanwhile, currently serves seven to 11-year-olds but will now extend its age range downwards and accept four-year-olds for the first time.

Linda Kemeny, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Educational Achievement, said: ‘Surrey needs to find more than 11,000 places in our primaries and secondaries over five years and our plans for Danetree Junior and two other Ewell schools will help towards that. All-through primary schools will also bring wider benefits by giving children stability and continuity.

‘There is rising demand for school places in Surrey but we’re short of the money we need to provide them at a time when our budgets are also under strain from the rising number of older people needing care.’

Under plans signed off by the county council’s Cabinet, Danetree Junior would start admitting reception pupils in September 2016.

A new teaching block will be built housing infant classrooms and a nursery, which would have 52 places. The plans also include extra car parking.

Under proposals for Ewell Grove and West Ewell, pupils who started reception at either school in 2014 would be the first to stay on until age 11 if they wished. The two infant schools would formally become primary schools in 2017.

Ewell Grove and West Ewell already have nurseries linked to them and Danetree would also offer nursery provision from September.
