Surrey Leader hits out at union’s week-long strike plans in Southern Rail dispute

Surrey County Council’s Leader has slammed proposals by the RMT union to strike for a full week in August.

David Hodge, said: “It is completely unacceptable for the RMT to cause so much disruption to the people of Surrey with a week-long strike.

“As a Southern passenger myself, I share the anger of Surrey’s passengers and businesses over the travel misery they have suffered during the past few weeks and this will add insult to injury.

“Their plan to strike is also irresponsible because it will compound the impact on the local and national economy. With the county a key powerhouse to our economic strength, I urge the union to reconsider their proposal.

“If anything, Surrey’s rail capacity needs boosting and once order is restored to the network we’ll push for this as part of our efforts to support passengers and businesses, including pressing for the North Downs Line to be fully electrified and ensuring the county gets the maximum benefit from Crossrail 2.”
