Surrey leader hails Claygate shopping parade’s national competition success

Following the news that Claygate has been named as one of the best local shopping areas in the country after being shortlisted in the Great British High Street competition, Surrey leader David Hodge said:

“This is fantastic news for Claygate. Local shops and village stores have a special place at the heart of their communities and clearly retailers at The Parade are doing a great job.

“While rising demand for services likes care for older and disabled people means money’s tight for us, I have no doubt that the fund we launched to help local shops will ensure they continue to play an integral part in daily life.”

Claygate’s The Parade is in the running to win the local centre or parade of shops category in the annual competition. Voting ends on 18 November. Reigate’s Cameron Bennett, who works at Waitrose, has been shortlisted in the under-25 category for people making a ‘unique contribution’. A full list of finalists is on the awards website.

Surrey launched a fund to improve local parades and village shops earlier this year. Bids will be considered on 9 November.
