Response to claims in the Local Government Chronicle that Surrey County Council has benefited most following the government’s announcement about addressing negative revenue support grant.
Surrey County Council Leader David Hodge said: “In no way is Surrey County Council ‘the biggest winner’ from this announcement. In truth, we were the biggest loser when the government revealed it was planning to end our grant but make Surrey taxpayers hand over £17.3 million to Whitehall. All they have done is cancel this out and rightly so.
“Surrey taxpayers already contribute significant funding to government through different mechanisms and I am delighted that the government has recognised that asking them to make a further contribution was unjust.
