Up to 165 new homes specially designed to help older people live independently are set to be provided across three sites in Surrey.
Surrey County Council has unveiled plans for three new extra care housing developments in Guildford, Surrey Heath and Runnymede.
Extra care housing allows older people to live in their own homes with care and support staff always on hand. The new homes would mark a significant step towards the county council’s goal of creating up to 725 new extra care homes by 2028.
Between them, the three developments would provide up to 165 apartments. Surrey County Council’s Cabinet will consider the plans at its meeting on Tuesday 29 October. More information can be found here (item 8).
Sinead Mooney, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, said: “We announced plans in July to provide as many as 725 new homes within a decade to enable older people to enjoy the benefits of independence and privacy with their own front door, safe in the knowledge that care and support is close at hand.
“Now we can reveal plans for three extra care housing developments which would be a big first step towards achieving our goal. The sites could between them provide 165 homes – up to a quarter of our target.
“These schemes will provide a ‘home for life’ for people whose disabilities, frailty, vulnerability or health needs mean that ordinary housing won’t let them remain independent but who don’t need to move to residential care.
“Residents will enjoy living in communities with a range of facilities such as cafes and will also stay connected to their local communities. Not only will these plans help residents live life to its fullest, they will also breathe new life into three sites where buildings are no longer needed.
“We will continue working closely with Surrey’s districts and boroughs on this initiative.”
The proposals would bring into use sites on the county council’s own land. The three sites are:
*Former Pond Meadow School, Pond Meadow, Guildford
*Former Pinehurst Resource Centre, Park Road, Camberley
*Former Brockhurst Care Home, Brox Road, Ottershaw
The council is proposing to team up with a development partner following a full tender process to provide extra care housing at Pond Meadow. For the other two sites, the council would work with its joint venture partner. The developments will seek to deliver as much affordable housing as possible.
