With temperatures due to plummet below 0°C tonight the county council’s winter highways operation has kicked into place.
A fleet of gritting lorries are set to head out on Surrey’s roads tonight on the Priority 1 network for the first time since last winter.
The trucks will be heading out from about 7pm after filling up from the council’s stockpile that holds more than 12,500-tonnes of salt.
Before tonight’s cold snap more than 1,700 grit bins had already been filled to help people treat roads and pavements in their local communities.
The council also has an army of farmers equipped with ploughs standing by ready to tackle any snow and ice in rural areas.
