Surrey, West and East Sussex are recruiting 999 call handlers

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit new control room officers.

The emergency room also cover West Sussex’s mobilising and control and are due to welcome East Sussex onboard later this year.

The role requires someone with an impeccable telephone manner, quick thinking and a good level of commitment.

Sally Wilson manages Joint Fire Control at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. She said: “The people in our fantastic Joint Fire Control are vital to our organisation. They are the first point of contact for all emergencies in residents’ time of need.

“The role is not easy and there will be an intensive initial training period however in return, you’ll be part of a lifesaving organisation focused on making people safer with opportunities for development and progression.

“No experience is required – we have a team full of people from diverse backgrounds and that’s great because they bring all of their varied knowledge and experience into one core team.”

Ian Guppy is a Crew Commander at the control room in Salfords, he said: “I’ve worked in fire and rescue control rooms for 14 years now and no day is the same. It is an incredible career opportunity and one I am still as thankful for today as I was when I started in March 2007. You work with residents to keep them calm, as safe as possible and reassured. You’ll also work with crews and officers to ensure they’re at the right place, at the right time, with the right resources to keep people safe.”

These positions are 12-month fixed term contracts. Successful applicants will be placed into a pool of suitable candidates for 12 months ready for opportunities to become available. Apply today by visiting www.surreycc.gov.uk/firecareers, closing date is Friday 15 October 2021.
