Surrey Fire and Rescue Service show support for Muslim colleagues and community in Fasting Collective

Last week, members of our service, including our Chief Fire Officer and Farnham’s White Watch, joined local Police Forces and Muslim communities to show support, learn more about Islam and observe Ramadan, as part of a ‘Fasting Collective’.

During Ramadan, which usually lasts 30 days, with the first fast taking place from Monday 11th March, Muslims abstain from food and drink, including water, during daylight hours, as a means of strengthening and reflecting on their faith.

Nine members of our service participated in the Fasting Collective, fasting during the day before joining the Islamic community at Mubarak Mosque in Tilford for Iftar, the evening meal to break the fast, organised by Surrey Police. During this gathering, they had the opportunity to observe prayers within the mosque and deepen their understanding of the local Muslim community.

Our Chief Fire Officer, Dan Quin spoke at the Fasting Collective, and has been fasting for part of Ramadan this year to gain further insight and understanding into the importance of Ramadan and fasting.

Dan said: “Fasting for Ramadan is a humbling experience that has deepened my respect for the dedication and strength of character exhibited by the Muslim community. I would like to thank the community for welcoming us into this enriching experience.

I’m proud that Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has had the opportunity to be a part of this initiative, and in collaboration with Surrey County Council, we’ve taken proactive steps to promote inclusion and understanding within our organisation.”
