The Queen chose Surrey to launch her Diamond Jubilee celebrations, she was welcomed to the Epsom Derby by The Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey Dame Sarah Goad and the Chairman of Surrey County Council Lavinia Sealy, where she officially kicked off the worldwide celebrations.

Elsewhere in Surrey hundreds of thousands of people held street parties and special events to honour the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

One such event was held at Guildford Cathedral where a special service of thanksgiving was jointly hosted by the Chairman of Surrey County Council and the Lord-Lieutenant.

Mrs Sealy said “The Queen came to the Epsom Derby just four days after her Coronation in 1953, and it was a huge honour for all of Surrey to welcome her back to begin celebrating her Diamond Jubilee. All of Surrey joined together to wish her the best over the Jubilee weekend.”
