Brompton Dock cycle hire rides into Woking

Twenty Brompton folding bicycles are now available to hire from Woking train station, making it easier for residents and visitors to travel sustainably around the town and beyond.

A Brompton Dock will house the bicycles, which can be hired on a day-to-day basis. The result of a partnership project between Surrey County Council’s Travel SMART team, South West Trains/Network Rail Alliance and Brompton Dock, the dock will greatly increase the amount of sustainable door-to-door journeys that can be made in and around Woking.

Brompton Dock is a unique cycle hire scheme that offers its members 24/7/365 access to Brompton bikes. After registering at www.bromptondock.co.uk, members can reserve a bike online or by text message from any of Brompton’s public docks including the one at Woking station.

Bikes are available for both long and short-term hire with a range of tariffs to suit all needs. The folding nature of the bikes means that they can be taken on public transport even during peak times, folded into the boot of a car and easily stored in the home or office. With hire fees from as little as £2.50 per day, it’s an affordable and convenient way of making your journey more sustainable.

The dock is just one of a raft of measures being put in place in Woking by the Travel SMART programme, which aims to help Surrey residents cut calories, carbon and cost. A partnership between Surrey County Council and other local organisations, it is funded by the Department of Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

John Furey with a Brompton bike

Visiting the new hub as it was officially opened on 30 October was John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet member for Transport. He said: “We are delighted to be working with South West Trains/Network Rail Alliance and Brompton Dock to deliver this fantastic facility which really puts cycling on the map for Woking. It will make it easier for people to cycle to or from Woking station, taking traffic off the roads and getting Surrey moving. It’s another step in encouraging more passengers to think of alternatives to the car.”

Phil Dominey, Stakeholder Manager for South West Trains/Network Rail Alliance added: “Brompton bikes have already proved to be a success on our network. We were the first in the country to embrace the concept and we are confident that this facility at the station will add to Woking’s reputation as a cycling town.”

Harry Scrope, Managing Director of Brompton Dock said: “Brompton Dock is delighted to be launching at Woking railway station. The Brompton folding bike opens up a myriad of new travel opportunities for business and leisure travel.

“By train, tube or in the boot of your car, see how a Brompton can reduce your travel time into central London or take it away for the weekend just for fun. As a member of Brompton Dock you will find our folding bikes for hire at over 24 locations nationally and for just £2.50 a day.”

Travel SMART is currently offering Surrey residents annual membership of Brompton Dock for just £10 (usually £20). Please email travelsmart@surreycc.gov.uk or call 03456 009 009 for more details of how to access the offer.
