Firms have won deals worth nearly £4 million from a new online initiative spearheaded by Surrey County Council.
Since launching in February, 31 local companies have been awarded £3.8m through the BuildSurrey website.
The site lets firms pitch for construction and repair work that the county council, its main contractors and other public sector organisations need doing as part of a pledge to ensure 60% of the authority’s spending on goods and services is with local businesses.
Already nearly 600 construction companies have joined the site and the council is inviting more to register. It is holding an event at the HG Wells Centre, Woking, on 14 November (4pm to 6.30pm), where they can also get advice about winning contracts and find out about work in the pipeline.
Surrey leader David Hodge said: “Local businesses are the heartbeat of every community and our role is to help them do what they do best – create jobs and promote growth. That is why we’ve pledged to ensure 60% of our spending is with local firms.”
