Surrey set to invest in 330 more school places

An extra 330 school places are set to be created as the county council pushes ahead with the biggest investment programme in Surrey’s history.

Classroom capacity at Hythe Primary in Staines will be boosted by 210 places and 120 will be added at Lyne and Longcross Church of England Infant to enable it to become a primary under plans being considered at a meeting on Wednesday 15 January.

Surrey is investing almost £330 million in creating 10,000 school places over the next three years after creating 6,000 since 2010 following a 20% rise in the birth rate.

Linda Kemeny, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning, said: “Surrey needs to find 10,000 school places over the next three years after successfully building 6,000 since 2010 to meet  a huge rise in demand from pupils.

“These place form part of that investment in schools – the biggest Surrey’s ever seen – to ensure that every pupil gets the best start in life.”
