This year’s Reigate Cycle Festival will take place on Sunday 20 July, encouraging more local people to ditch their cars and get on their bikes instead.

The festival, from 10am-5pm in Priory Park, is a family-friendly event including stunt demonstrations, expert advice on safety and maintenance, exhibits from cycling groups and shops, a large variety of food stalls and kids entertainment. There will also be a guided bike tour around the park and a host of other activities.

The free event is a way to find out more about cycling and caters to all abilities, from hardcore cycle enthusiasts to people who are interested in giving it a go for the first time.

Building on the success of last year’s event, which attracted over a thousand people, the festival forms part of Surrey County Council’s Travel SMART initiative, which aims to help Surrey residents cut carbon, calories and cost by ditching the car and using sustainable transport modes instead.

Mike Goodman, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and the Environment, said: “We’re particularly keen for new cyclists and people getting back on their bike after a few years to come along to the festival.”

People who register for the free festival in advance by visiting http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/travelsmart will be entered into a prize draw to win a £750 bike.

A further festival will take place in Guildford’s Stoke Park on Sunday 17 August.
