Stanwell Moor gets new bus service

Residents in Stanwell Moor are to gain a new bus service which will make it easier to get to local hospitals, shops and the airport for work, Surrey County Council has announced.

Passengers will be able to use the 446 bus to reach Ashford and St Peter’s hospitals and St. David’s Medical Centre in Stanwell as well Heathrow Airport.

The new service came about with financial contributions from Heathrow Airport’s £1 million Local Transport Development Fund, Surrey County Council and bus company Abellio. The decision was made after residents responded to a bus review launched with the aim of saving local taxpayers £2 million while maintaining services residents rely on the most.

Mike Goodman, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning, said: “This is great news for Stanwell Moor. We’ve listened to residents and met local councillors who told us there was a demand for this service, which is why we have worked hard with Heathrow and Abellio to introduce it.

“However, it really is a case of use it or lose it. We can’t afford to subsidise under used buses as we face huge pressure on our budgets from rising demand for social care and school places. So if after a year we find it hasn’t been used enough we’ll have to reassess the situation.”

Simon Earles, Planning & Surface Access Director for Heathrow, said: “This new route not only provides a vital link for Stanwell Moor, it is a key part of our plans to persuade 3,800 more Heathrow colleagues to choose sustainable transport. Over the past ten years, Heathrow has spent over £25 million on public transport projects, and because of that, single occupancy car journeys by colleagues has been reduced by 10%, and passenger public transport use has increased to over 40%.

“We have ambitious plans to do more, and will work with partners like Surrey Council to reduce car use, reduce congestion and improve air quality around our communities.”

The bus will run every hour on Monday to Saturday between Heathrow Terminal 5, Staines, Chertsey and Woking, with the service starting on Saturday 29 August.

The new service will run through Stanwell Moor from early morning until mid-evening to enable people to reach Staines and Heathrow for work or shopping, while connections are also available at Terminal 5 for other parts of the airport.
